“Our vision is a world built on solidarity.

Our mission is to create a sustainable and democratic energy system”

Our purpose

Humanity faces enormous challenges in the 21st century. We live in a world of multiple crises: the climate catastrophe and the questions around energy are a big part of that. Individual action is not the way to overcome these challenges. The real solution is a sustainable economy built on solidarity.

Technology- and competition-driven thinking is not a solution for the problems caused by the collapse of complex natural systems, the unaffordability of energy or the barriers to renewables. Indeed, the causes of the crisis are inseparable from the way the economy operates today.

The question is how we can reorganize energy production and use in a way that addresses social inequities, supports the restoration of natural systems and minimizes harmful emissions that cause climate change.

We believe that the solution lies in democratic, consumer-owned, decentralized, renewable-based energy production. Therefore, at Transformator we are working on community energy production and efficiency solutions based on cooperative principles.

Transformator aims to develop a network of energy communities that are resistant to the vagaries of the market, bringing us closer to a just and green energy transition in Hungary based in social self-governance.

What is community energy?

Community energy includes every energy production, distribution and conservation solution that serves the reform of a community’s energy system. In addition to environmentally friendly technological solutions, community energy ensures the democratic control of users over generation and distribution.

The Hungarian energy system is centralized and unidirectional: large power plants produce (mainly from nuclear or fossil sources) and users consume. In this setup people can only suffer the fluctuations of the global market and the whims of monopolistic actors while the green energy transition is still to come.

On the other hand, community energy meets the needs of consumers through local production based on renewable sources. Furthermore, users also acquire the right to control the revenue from savings through ownership. Shared energy management develops energy-awareness, democratic governance promotes social solidarity and community-building as we work with our neighbors, friends and local institutions on energy.

Energy revolution manifesto

The climate crisis is already suffocating. The next energy crisis could happen at any time. We feel helpless and vulnerable. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Let’s take control of our electricity system! Let’s tackle the climate crisis and live better lives in the process!

Why should we change? We want a solidarity-based economy that is built on cooperation instead of environmental and social exploitation!

What should we change? Let’s transform the electricity system to 100% renewable production!

How should we change? Through community energy initiatives, in mutual cooperation with local governments, trade unions, and public utility companies, we can democratically transform the electricity system for a more sustainable and just future!

The manifesto has two goals:

to provide guidance on transforming the electricity system for the solidarity economy and those involved in the change,
and to reshape thinking about the future of the electricity system within the industry and beyond.
